Hon. Banji Akinkuowo, popularly known as “Sweet Banana” and former Executive Chairman of Idanre Local Government, on Sunday, 28 December 2025, marked his 80th birthday in grand style amid an outpouring of encomiums from family members, friends, political associates, and well-wishers.
The thanksgiving service, held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Idanre, attracted a large congregation that filled the church to capacity. In his sermon titled “Christ Shared Humanity with Us So That We Can Share Divinity with Him,” the Archdeacon, Venerable Blessing Aregbesola, described the celebrant as humble, sociable, lively, and of admirable character. He encouraged Hon. Akinkuowo to remain steadfast on his enviable path of honour and to devote more time to the service of God.
The cleric noted that Hon. Akinkuowo’s 80th birthday coincided with the celebration of 130 years of Christianity in Idanre, describing the celebrant’s youthful appearance and sound health as gracious gifts from God. Special prayers were offered for continued good health, long life, and divine grace upon him.
The reception later held at Goshen Trust Hotel event hall was colourful and well attended. Guests were treated to assorted snacks, meals, and drinks, while Segun Wonder and his musical band provided lively entertainment that thrilled attendees throughout the event.
His Excellency, Dr. Rahman Segun Mimiko, former Governor of Ondo State and Chairman of the occasion, took guests down memory lane, describing Hon. Banji Akinkuowo as a man of honour, integrity, and dedication to service. He attested to the celebrant’s trustworthiness and commitment during their political journey, particularly in the Labour Party era.
In her remarks, Olori Beatrice Ogunlowo described Hon. Akinkuowo as a reliable, accommodating, and supportive family man, recalling his steadfastness during periods of life-threatening political crises in the South-Western part of the country.
Chief Sir Kola Ademujimi, Baba Ijo General of the Methodist Church, likened Hon. Akinkuowo to a dependable goalkeeper who guarded the goalpost for five consecutive years, noting how he selflessly used his positions to uplift others.
One of the highlights of the reception was the cutting of the birthday cake, directed by Princess Iwayemi Omolara, who wished the celebrant continued good health and a fulfilled life.
